Activity Settings

This article explains how to modify many aspects of an activity directly from the gradebook, such as how many points an assignment is worth, whether it is gradable, and so on–therefore removing the need to edit the activity from the library. It is important to note that activity settings only affect the activities for the current classroom.

How to Access Activity Settings From the Gradebook

To access activity settings from the gradebook:

  • Click on “Grades” from the left-hand side navigation.
  • From the Gradebook, make sure you have selected the appropriate classroom’s gradebook from the dropdown menu at the top left.
  • Hover your mouse over the title of any activity, at the top of that activity’s column.
  • Just to the right of the assignment title, you will see three dots appear. Click those dots to open a dropdown menu.
  • From this dropdown menu, click “Edit Activity Settings”. This will open the activity settings panel on the right side of the screen.
    • More information on the activity settings panel and the function of every setting in the section below.

The Activity Settings Panel

  • At the top of the activity settings panel, you will see the name of the activity in bold, and the lesson that the activity is from below in a smaller font.
  • Beneath the activity and lesson title, you will see a purple button that says “View [activity type] Details”. The activity type might be Discussion, Journal, Test, Assignment, etc.
    • Clicking this button will open the relevant prompts, sections, and activity requirements for your review.
    • When you are finished reviewing the activity, click the red “Close [activity type] Details” button.
  • Beneath that button will be the activity settings themselves. More details in the section below.
  • Once the relevant settings have been updated, click the purple “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the activity settings panel to save your changes. Clicking anywhere outside the panel will close it.

Activity Settings for Every Activity Type

Total Possible Points

  • Change this number to change the total possible points for this activity.
  • Warning: if you have already graded some submissions in this activity’s column, the students’ grades will not adjust, but their total points possible will–which could affect their overall grade.
  • Note: If the assignment has one or more sections, this button will simply read “Section 1, 2 etc.” instead of “Total Possible Points.” Its functionality remains the same.

Gradable

  • Toggling this on will make the activity count towards your students’ overall grades.

Auto Pass

  • Toggling this on will make the activity automatically give full points on submission.

Hide Grade Until Date

  • Toggling this will make it so the grade will be hidden until a certain date. Students will see a "pending" message indicating that the grade has not yet been applied, or that it has not yet been graded in their gradebook.

Activity Settings Unique to Discussions

The following settings will only appear on the activity settings panel for discussions. If you have already graded some submissions in this discussion’s column, these changes will not affect those students’ grades.

Create Thread

  • Toggling this on will require the student to create a thread on the discussion board for it to be counted as completed.

Reply to Thread

  • Toggling this on will require the student to reply to a thread on the discussion board for it to be counted as completed.

Hide Until Thread Created

  • Toggling this on will hide the other threads and replies on the discussion board until the student creates a thread. Useful for when you want students to not be distracted by their classmates’ ideas.
